One of the many revelations when I first changed over from paddling skis to kayaks was that kayaks came in different volumes (sizes). One size does not fit all.

This means that there were slight variations on models of boats from the same manufacturer.

The most common rule of thumb, and please remember that this is referring to paddling in the early 80's, was that light weight's paddled a Tiger, mid-rangers paddled Cleavers, and us of a heavier build paddled the Cleaver-X. Boat selection was simple!

Hi Folks,

Hey All,

I know this is last minute but I am desperate to do a valley run in the decent water ( I'm not doing the race this year due to having not trained for it at all).
I have two years experience of the valley but haven't paddled much this year.
I'm happy to go with anyone who's interested but would probably suit a less experienced paddler as I will know the rapids but not be fit to power through the flats.

Anyone interested in going for a run Tuesday meeting at Bells after 9.30 (stupid uni commitments)

or Wednesday anytime of the day

Then give us a bell on 0433421550.

Bells @ 1300 hrs 2nd July 2011.

Paul - Bells drop.

3.5m swell tomorrow and wind dropping off, so a couple of us are headed out to surf the swell off Mandurah Seashells Hotel. Protected waters with nice clean swell that at times can be ridden for several hundred metres!

So anyone who would ratherbepaddling tomorrow arvo is welcome to join us, 1pm at the beach carpark East of Seashells hotel.

We spent some time travelling up & down the river in a House Boat and were lucky enough to take a couple of play boats along.

The play boats served as a reminder to me of why I enjoy paddling; being able to get out on a river and enjoy the environment! There is really something to be said for quietly paddling along at the base of some of the rather large cliffs at sunset.

They also served another useful purpose as rescue craft. The river was flowing fast enough to make it tricky for the children to get back to the boats, so it was handy to do pick-up runs every now and then.

Someone say jetskis?

Was someone talking about jetskis (AKA Aqua-Bogans)?

Some friends & I are contemplating our first trip to paddle the Collie River below Wellington Dam, but none of us have paddled there before. We are all competent paddlers (Avon Descent etc), paddling a mixture of long plastics & a K1.

Can anyone offer information that would be useful to us on our first excursion? Boat suitability? Put in & take out points? Achievable paddling distances & times? Major hazards & obstacles etc?

- Maddo.
