Rookie's Duel, Awesome event THANKS!

Thanks to all that traveled from a far (some even further than North of the River) ... South Africa, USA and beyond! A special thanks to the MOCas that put in hard work organising. I'm a MOCa that helped out a bit, but many more did more than me, so a big thanks to them! I am hearing great feedback from many participants, so it seems that the hard work was appreciated by most, if not all.

What a prize list, I helped giving out the prizes, and there were a lot to give out. Some big prizes for the guns, and some smaller ones for those further down the results. Best of all, two major prizes as spot prizes for those that remained, and some other good spot prizes for others. As I am unlikely to get a podium in my lifetime, it was fantastic to see some very good random prizes to encourage all participants ... though I must have a word to the organisers as I didn't win one!

Water safety was also superb. There were lots of support boats, water police and sea rescue everywhere. They were actively keeping recreational craft at bay, so a big thanks to them too.

I chose to paddle my faster (tippier) Carbonology Atom, rather than my 'comfortable' Epic V10. My race started with a good spot on the line, then in the first 1/2km or so I was cursing my choice of boats (and lack of skill) thinking "if the whole race is like this I'm in trouble". There was the usual wind wave, and bounce back off the heads and reef, coupled with 200 odd craft wash and support boats ... I was struggling a bit but backed off the pace a little to stay upright and struggled on. Swearing at myself did not help, so I headed out to sea a little to get away from chop which kind of worked, but sacrificed a little time with added distance. Sometimes this outside route pays off with better runs, but the SW/WSW wind does not really favour the outside line in my somewhat Rookie opinion.

I settled in to the tippy boat after about 2km, which is fair enough as I had not paddled for two weeks having been a bit crook. My heart rate seemed a bit high (normally high in a race, but a little higher), and my temperature was up. I tried to blame my sickness, but it turns out most people were melting out there with the mild tail wind providing little relief. I got over my excuses and settled into a comfortable race pace, and splashed my head with water every few runs.

The wind seemed to have a little more W in it than normal. Fine for the Northen folk who cut across regularly due to their coastline, but us MOCas get picky, and often paddle in our ideal SSW conditions. Good technical conditions for those who know how to paddle and surf. Though not a total Rookie, I'm no surf legend, so I got some good runs, and missed some good runs, but was overall pretty happy with it.

Then I came to the reef crossing. I was saddened to see that my local knowledge did not give me much advantage as many 'imported paddlers' cut across the reef. I quietly hoped for a lower tide so I could shoot through the small secret passage, while others risked their rudders. Turned out to be high tide so everyone could sail across the reef. I managed to time my reef crossing between any decent waves, so cursed a bit more, just because. I picked up some weed, but thankfully shed it by the end of the reef, others were not so lucky, some taking weed all the way to the finish line.

When passing the MOC club, I was a good 3 min or so slower than what I expected, cursed again, blamed something or other, then found out that most were slower than normal, so it must have been a bit technical out there. Downwind over, I had my eyes glued to the water, looking for weed patches, and meandered through the gaps, kind of good to keep my mind off the head wind waiting for me in the channel.

After turning North up the channel, I hit the lovely head wind, about 1 km that felt like another 10km! I recalled Dawid & Nikki Mocke's book saying to focus on technique when battling. Didn't help, I was spent, my technique was spent and I fell apart! I quietly hoped others were struggling. Turns out I struggled more than others, lost a place there, maybe two, and missed some good wash, but was happy to get through.

Finally the turn around the white markers to see the checkered flag ahead. Some small runs to the finish, gained a little ground but no extra places.

Overall I'm quite happy with my effort, could have been better, could have been worse. I could sit around thinking of excuses as to why I did not get a PB when passing the club, but it was tricky out there, and I have a lot to learn.

When driving home, I reflected on a great day, good companionship, and was proud to be one of the MOCas that helped (a little) to pull off a great event. I also quietly knew that no matter how good this one was, the next one is likely to be even better!

PS: Did a Cut Run today (day after Duel), it was 25-30 knts and pretty big. It's still blowing hard at 9pm while I write this. A bit beyond my comfort zone, but what a blast ... I left the tippy boat at home today, thankfully! Others would have loved today's conditions on race day, but I'm thankful race day was a little more forgiving!

Great Duel !

Once again it was a great paddle/battle along the Mandurah Coast. well done to the organisers and all competitors.
Personally I dueled with a fellow plastic paddler all the way down the coast exchanging leads as we picked up different runs and eventually managed to pass him upwind in the channel. It was an epic battle, such that when I got home I had to make an appointment with the "Doctor" . Look forward to getting down for a cut run, after I see the Doc.

Thanks to the Perth Paddlers who made the trip to the Duel!

Many thanks have been extended to the MOCas for the Duel in its second consecutive successful year, but thanks are due to the band of regulars from Perth who made the trip down to our shores to have a crack at this fun, friendly event as well as the lead up sessions.

It's great to have a following and the MOCas appreciate it very much and enjoy extending their hospitality to fellow lovers of cool Downwinds.

Come on back before the seabreezes mellow and have a go at what's arguably the ultimate Downwind on these shores, "The Black Dog Run", which gains its name from the Black Dog Cafe, the destination at the end of the run at Golden Bay:-)))
Let's hope the Doctor comes home to visit again for the weekend!
Aloha

Brave, stupid or goforit

It's blowing 30 knots. I want to go out. I am reasonably proficient in the surf but have only done a couple of downwind paddles at around 15 knots. I told my wife I'll be fine and she can pick me up up the coast a bit. She's not so sure. Are my eyes bigger than my stomach or should I go for it? My wife will only pick me up if I (somebody else) can convince her.

listen to your wife

So . . . you have very little downwind experience, and you want to go out, by yourself, in conditions twice as big as what you've been in before.

My vote: stupid.

Hopefully I'm not too late to tell you that! Paddling downwind alone is always a dumb idea. Stay safe, live to paddle another day!

Rookie's picture

Listen to your wife ... mostly

I second Ski Girl's comments ... but only for this case, as a husband knows when to listen and when to ... umm ... understand?

Never go out in conditions beyond your comfort zone without an understanding wingman (or woman), safety gear, and well known plans. It was pretty windy out there today, and even the best plans don't always eventuate. It is hard to keep track of each other, and even if with a paddle buddy, sometimes there is little you can do in time of need, than to stay with the struggling person for moral support (which can be very valuable).

The Cut Run we do in Mandurah is a pretty safe run, but all have dangers. We can shoot along the coast about 500m off the beach, so even if things go bad, most competent ocean paddlers / swimmers can make shore safely with or without damaged ski.

A simple change of plans at the last minute, not keeping others informed of an alternative route, or early withdrawal, can lead to unnecessary angst among the rest of the team who are sure to worry about you. Simple gear failure can turn into something more complicated if not prepared, and without the right safety gear.

So listen to your wife, or listen to your heart. If it doesn't feel right on the beach, it won't feel right out there. Stick to your plan, stay together, take your safety gear, and inform others of changes of plans, or withdrawls. Better to pull out of one downwind, and enjoy plenty of future paddles.

All good paddlers respect a paddler's tough decision not to paddle when they are not comfortable.

Wife wins!

Yes, you are right. It started gusting up to 38knots after my post and I realised I would be flat out just getting the ski on my roof.

Unfortunately I always go out alone because I'm the only downwind enthusiast in town - astounding considering this is Geraldton.

What would be the ideal/maximum wind conditions for enjoyable adrenalin-producing downwind paddling?? Can a large swell compensate for lack of wind??

No sleep till ... The Mandurah Duel!

Exciting times ... less than 24 hrs to go wooo hooo!

Dunno what the remnants of the cyclone will do, but it's looking SSW 15 knots, so cross fingers it stays that way or blows a bit more.

For those that think they missed out, you can still enter on the day so c'mon down and enjoy!

200+ entrants this is becoming a big event yeee haaa. Some gun seuf afrikans, and aussies, should be a good day ... not that I will see them after the start!

Hope to see some of you there.

thanks to the MOCas!

Wow, what a great day yesterday. Conditions were not great at the start and I wobbled for 2km until I finally managed to get out far enough to catch runs - but then it was awesome fun. Thanks to Mandurah Ocean Club for all the organising, can't wait for next year's Duel!!

Wanakikamoocow's picture

Congrats

Well done guys and girls for organising a successfull day. The atmosphere was great and all paddlers very friendly.
So organised in fact that you managed to swing the wind around in time for the race start and even releasing dolphins at the beginning of the race. RSPCA might be having a word with you ;)
I enjoyed surfing my way to the finish. My only dissapointment was seeing my rival (brother) at the finish with a big grin on his face. Unfortunately Estuary beat Ocean.

Lets duel !!!

Cant wait till the race starts.
Lets hope that the wind is SW and not WSW as some forecasts are saying.

Looking forward to seeing all the racers out there.
Thanks MOCCAS

time to go

I've been up since 4am, had the boat on the car at 5.30. Packed everything I need last night.
2 hour drive with 3 toilet stops and Mcdonalds to keep the kids happy. Better allow 2 and 3/4 hours. Mrsdicko doing her hair (there goes 2 hours). Kids still not dressed and it's 7.30.
I hate race days. I'm usually buggered before the start. If I was a single man I would have left at 3am and slept at the start, gone to Dome for breakfast, a much more relaxing experience.
I hope my cunning plan to carry an extra 4 kg's of ballast around my stomach works. I've been ballast adding and carbo loading all christmas in preparation for today. I note with interest that most of the top paddlers don't subscribe to my extra ballast/more stability theory, instead opting for the less weight/ more speed theory. I hope this will give me the edge. I suspect not.
Plan B. Draft anything and everyone.
Plan C. Try not to be last at the start. Don't fall out at the start (haven't fallen out for 2 years, but it's a recurring nightmare).
Plan D. Be gracious in defeat when my mates beat me and have several plausible and faultless excuses ready in case this eventuates. Try and keep a straight face when I explain how I had to stop and refit my rudder, etc, etc.
There, that took up 10 minutes. Time to go. If I can just get the kids dressed.

The Duel phorecast ... looking good!

Still a little too far out to be placing bets, but Seabreeze predictions are looking good for The Duel.

Current preditions show 15kn SW, 1.2m swell. About perfect for most paddlers. Some may want a little more, others a little less, just right for everyone!

I just hope I get rid of this damn cold by Sunday ... though I'll paddle regardless ... I'm not missing this year!

Damn Cyclone

I hope that blessed cyclone does not stuff up the wind direction for Sunday. Looked a short while ago and I'm not so confident anymore. :(

looks like 22km SSW for the Mandurah duel, better than 22km east. cant wait

2012 Mandurah Duel

Cash and prizes worth $5,000+ up on the website.
Hurry up and register.

windless

Forecast isn't looking the greatest what happens if there's no wind?

Estuary wins?

If there is no wind, estuary wins! :)

Still 7 days to go. At least the direction is more or less the right direction. I am still betting on good conditions, though I am waiting with my registration in case I am wrong (I will do the duel no matter what, but might do estuary in the plastic if ocean is not looking great.).

money on estuary K1 paddler for duel 2012

I think a good K1 estuary paddler could take it in light SW winds, this year. I am doing it in a ski .

Wanakikamoocow's picture

Windless?

Looking at Sea Breeze shows no wind but if you look at Mandurah local weather, its predicting wind speeds 21km/hr southerly by 3pm Sunday
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/wa/lower-west/mandurah
I'm not sure how reliable this is but I'm hanging on to it!!!

More wind, More wind, More wind

Crikey, seabreeze got updated as I'm writing this and its now pumping up
Fickle weather forcasting

seabreeze

Wow, what a change to the forecast . . . and if we start at 9:30pm when winds are 20kt southerly we will be loving it!

Wooohooo

Wooohooo - those Mandurah Ocean Club people must be well connected. Ask for a seabreeze, and there it is! Can we also have it rain candy? Thank you.

drunk goblins

Quite clearly the Duel wind forecast is being made up by drunk goblins, it now looks crap again.

The best way to deal with drunk goblins? Ignore them. Until Friday, anyway, which is the next time I'll look at the wind forecast!

just checked again

This morning was looking like wash riding practice. The new forecast suggests I may need a bigger rudder. The surf rudder I ordered a month ago still hasn't turned up. How about someone who has done a Cut run giving us a little lesson on tactics. Is there any reef to avoid? Is it best to head out first or keep a tight line closer to shore. I used to surf there a lot 30 years ago and all I remember was there were a few bombies out the back. Please Mr Postman bring my new rudder!

thebigadski's picture

Cut Run Tips - from a local!

1. DO NOT head straight WEST out of the Cut thinking its best to go out a bit then turn & chase the runs!
2. Catch the runs as soon as they appear
3. Slowly cut left and chase the runs right so you end out on a deeper line than you would think (however this changes when there is little wind - closer line to shore prevails then)
4. On the deep line, half way, look out for the big "wine glass" on the hill, and line it up.
5. Once u see the nav marker @ Roberts Point, aim to its right and come in close over the reef - there is an inside channel in the reef of the point about 25m off the beach.
6. Catch the remaining left over runs & cross shit chop!! to the Estuary mouth.
7. Hit the out-going tide & yell expilitives!!
8. Stay close to either rock wall until u hit the red channel bouy in the middle & cross.
9. Put the hard yards in cause it's almost over!
10.Turn the corner, head towards the Performing Arts Center and rejoice!!

cut run advice

My cut run advice: head out about 4km offshore. Then when you get close to the end, turn left. ;-)

Some people have local waters knowledge, some of us have made the pilgrimage down to Man-drah to learn . . . I'm not giving away any of my inside knowledge, it's my only hope for not being DFL (dead . . . last).

It's an awesome downwind run though and I hope everyine enjoys it!!!

Sorry for asking

And if I could find the time, I too would make the pilgrimage. I'll just follow pilbralad at a discreet distance. His hair is the easiest to spot from afar. Pilbra, do me a favour and don't wear a hat. My entire navigation strategy now revolves around your wooly mane.

which wind works?

hey guys, (first comment - be nice)

just checking wind for the event, so we start at almost 2:00pm yeah? and seabreeze is giving a forecast of 11-12 knots (although that changed heaps just today!), that is obviously perth specific. anyone with any local knowledge know if that winds in mandurah are usually the same or bit higher or lower?

really looking forward to my first race to start the avon training program (yuck)

Duel rego ... almost there

Hey guys,

Fully understand the angst about lack of The Duel registration ... everything has been logged with the registration crew, and I'm sure they will set it up as soon as the are back from their break (within a day or so) ... apologies for the delay, but those that have been doing The Cut Runs recently will know it is worth the wait!

Cheers,
RP

Merry Christmas

To all the RBP people out there wishing you all a merry christmas and a new year full of great paddling adventures.See you on the water in 2012

all the best

Mandurah Cut Run (Mandurah Duel Race Course)

I heard a rumour there are a lot of people doing a cut run tomorrow (Friday) afternoon.

Any Info ?

Thanks

Rookie's picture

Ho Ho, CUT RUN, Ho

Nothing official, but rumors seem to be coming to fruition. Paddlers near and a far seem to be congregating from 4pm Friday near MOC HQ (Old Sailing Club, Doddis Beach, Mandurah), for some Christmas Cheer. Options of a hootin' downwind, slightly more mild Estuary run, or even a mild canal run could all be possible.

With 20-25 knots SSW forecast at the cut (totally unsubstantiated Rookie Paddler Forecast with no affiliation to the Phantom), I'll be hauling my Christmas cheer through the ocean ... yeeeer haaa!

Other rumors of cold drinks and hot BBQs afterwards are sure to substantiate.

The rumors of Santa bringing new skis to all remain rumors, as most of you have been naughty, not nice!

Bring your boats, cars, trailers, snags and bevvies to see what unfolds. Oh and leg leashes and PFDs of course, because that's what us responsible paddlers do.

Rookie's picture

Ho Ho CUT RUN Ho ... Pt2 & 3

Thanks to those that came down to MOC for a Cut Run yesterday and today ... what a great way to lead up to Christmas. The Cut put on some great downwind weather for those that came, with a small BBQ and a few drinks after on Friday.

Friday saw pretty much ideal conditions. 18-22 knts SSW with about a 1m swell. Some paddlers went a little too close to the shore, not dangerous at all, but trickier conditions as the runs change direction near the shore, stand up a bit, and bounce off the shore. A couple went out a little further to take advantage of more consistent runs. Great fun for the experienced, challenging but rewarding for the less experienced or those getting back into form or trying new boats. Maybe a swim or two ... but no names ;-)

Saturday (Christmas Eve) saw slightly heavier conditions, and a smaller group. 20-25knts SSW with a 2m swell. The usual silence as paddling out from the cut where the swell stands up a bit ... what am I getting myself into? However, it was worth the 500m or so heading out to line up better runs for the rest of the run. Steeper drops than Friday, and not quite as consistent. The odd set of 3 or 4 big ones back to back, with a breather in between. All enjoyed the conditions, though some were starting to fatigue towards the end after doing two runs back to back. No documented/witnessed swims, plenty of close calls I'm sure, ... and a few fatigue wobbles once back near shore ;-)

All finished with smiles on their faces, good stories, and keen to come back for more.

Once again, thanks for coming down to enjoy the Cut Run, we welcome you back for more in the future.

(I will of course put some video together after I get over my Christmas loot! ... or lack there of!)

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all those that would Rather Be Paddling ... than opening socks and jocks!

Thanks for the advice Rookie.

Thanks for the advice Rookie. What a great place to paddle. 2 runs in 2 days and loved every second of it. Bring on later in the week when I will be trying to get out for a couple more runs. See you all at the state championships tomorrow. I will be missing the 2m swell on the lake :(.

Thanks MOCAS and thanks Rookie

Would like to second what Spencer said. Thank you Rookie for swinging back, staying back and being such a huge help. I hope one day I can do the same for another rookie paddler (terrible pun, sorry). Also, thank you to the Mandurah Ocean Club for putting on a nice barbecue after: great bunch of folks, amazing location, and beer: what more could you ask for? The MOC really is an example of what a paddle club can and should be. Can't wait for the Duel.

Also, the cut really is everything they say it is. Beautiful water, dolphins, and of course runs that just keep coming.

Awesome.

Geraldton Mouth to Mouth

Calling All Paddlers.
I am researching interest in a 20km paddle in Geraldton on either Easter Sunday (4 April 2012) or Sunday 3 June. Both are long w/ends.

If enough people show interest I will get to work organising it.

Let me know if you are keen and which date you prefer. jason.joyner@det.wa.edu.au

I appreciate knowing of any major clashes concerns with the dates.

I heard this race is on the 17th December. Can anyone confirm?

I'm not talking about the fremantle to Mindarie relay race which I believe is a team event and also appears to be on the 17th December too.

Choose your forum

This Mandurah Duel forum is not the right place to be discussing clubs and ocean racing in general. Can you please start a new forum to discuss IOP and other events?

In general this RBP site seems to go 'off topic' quite a lot (I am guilty of this myself sometimes). It would be a better site for all if we try to keep on topic, or start a new one if there is not one already.

River Animal's picture

Forums

Rookie, sorry point taken.
but as I see you put the Duel under the Marathon forum? (touche - LOL)
Is it better to post something or not? I just play around and have a bit of fun and thought the IOP's would be good training/experience for the duel.
Admin, can I create a forum?? or can you please creat a new one, thanks.

Rookie's picture

Containers

Hey RA ... Yes I had to put this under "Marathon & Related" as I was unable to create a "Mandurah Duel" 'container' under races ... hence my request to admin in the abstract for a new container. I thought there might even be some 'conflict' generated by putting it under "marathon & related" due to the calendar conflict this year.

I've been part of the discussions for site improvement, and there will be better times ahead, but like Bolders says ... we would all rather be paddling than updating sites ;-)

I think so long as we try to stay on topic things will improve a little without full site restructuring. Maybe permissions to create new containers may help too.

Forum re-jig

OK, done a new 'Container' called Paddling Passions, with various Forums for different paddling disciplines. We can now add to this as we want to.

I think the permissions let you add Forum Topics within a Forum, and site admin does the Containers and top level of the Forums. Easy to go from there.

River Animal's picture

Re-Jig

Thanks Bolders, I know we would all rather B paddln but there are always a number of users and guests online some very early in the morning whilst the kids are still asleep? the re jig is worthwhile. RA

Site needs improving

Yep it's easily gets messed up, just like my kids room.

We (the RBP Inner Circle) are part-way through re-designing the forums and comments to be more 'front and centre' on the site and to be easier to access a range of people's input.

Unfortunately, we'd rather be paddling than redesigning our website so it will happen slowly!

2012 Mandurah Duel

In an unfortunate turn of events, the 2012 Mandurah Duel currently coincides with the Claisebrook race of the Marathon Series.

I second Bin's comments made in the Bay 2 Beach Forum here. Many of the Mandurah Ocean Club enjoy the Claisebrook race, as do I. I would really like to paddle both events. Though I am not a high performance paddler, I will choose the opportunity to paddle in a World Series event over a WA event, so this year my choice will be The Duel.

The unfortunate timing of the new Uncle Toby's event was the start of the change of The Duel. When the Ocean Paddling World Series organizers later offered for The Dual to be included in their series, there was only one date that tied in with other World Series events. The Mandurah Ocean Club naturally went with the World Series opportunity.

I believe that this was discussed with the Marathon Committee at the time. I too hoped that the Marathon Committee would consider changing their date, but also understand that they set their dates well in advance, so others can plan around them. I'm sure that they are tired of others asking for them to change.

If the events remain on the same date, then people will have to choose between them. This is unfortunate for the paddling community as a whole, and for event organizers and sponsors, as attendance to each will be reduced.

As for calendar entries, I struggle to keep up with the multiple calendars, as do most. MOC made a CWA entry using "canoe.org.au" as soon as the date was set. I guess in future MOC will have to email CWA too, to make sure it is included in their Excel version ... and of course announce it on Rather Be Paddling, where I'm sure Fiasco, Ski Girl and others will propagate it to the world.

Here's the CWA (canoe.org.au) calendar entry FYI.
