Adventure Racing

Hey Guys,

For those interested in adventure racing I thought I would let you know of an awesome one I just did this weekend.
Its called Caffeinated and is a 24hr adventure race with kayaking, Mt biking and running/orienteering/bush bashing.

I hadnt heard about if before even though this is its 4th year running. They change the location every year. Its a team race where you need a group of 4 who must stick together for the whole race. I raced with Team Ascot KC and had heaps of fun with the boys. It was an epic adventure and had a heap of tough challenges to ensure you really relied on your team mates.

Part of our race involved a 5hr (12am - 5am) paddle leg on the Wellington Dam. As well as the challenge of the dark, a super thick fog decended on us, limiting vision to around 10m. There were 9 checkpoints on the leg which involved navigating to tiny inlets and trudging up creek beds or finding random logs in the middle of no-where. The fog was so thick a team (all girls!) behind us lost each other 5min into the paddle and spent the next 2 hrs trying to find each other.

It was an awesome adventure, definitely recommend it.

You can check it out at (http://www.caffeinated.com.au/). Make sure you have a crack at when it comes around again next year.

Yes there were a few of us.

And most of us will be doing the Denmark Adventure Race in October as well, which is also pretty acheivable by the average descenter. (Come on Juffy)

Matt, we would have been happy to spend just 5 hrs on the paddle leg, we were out there for 7 which included an extra 4 km's from 26 to TA and back again when we couldn't find it.

What Matt Said

There was a few RBPers at Caffeinated, and some weren't even crazy. It's by no means an easy race, but definitely achievable by your average Descenter with a bit of cross-training on bike and foot. Much like the Descent, there's a few loony fast people out the front and the rest us bumbling along behind with some great camaraderie between the teams.

It's also largely independent of water levels, so you don't have to be glued to RBP for weeks leading up to the race to know how much it's going to hurt. :)
