New start times - latest update

bolders's picture
Earlier start times announced for paddlers, by giving Power craft an option to start further downriver if they choose. Thanks NADA!

Wed 4/8 Check the Avon Descent site for information on an earlier start for paddlers this Saturday. Nice work, organisers. Info says the following [bits in square brackets added]:

"Change of start time 2010 Avon Descent (Subject to Weather)
To provide the best possible opportunity for all craft to complete the 2010 Avon Descent the following changes to start times have been made for Saturday 7th August

Power
7.30am – Northam [Boats going for prizes]
8.30am – Katrine [Rest of the Power Boats who choose to start here instead to try and finish]

Paddle
8.15am - Northam – This start time is 41 minutes earlier than the scheduled start time for the first paddle craft."

RBP Comment Nicely done. As much additional time as is practical, to give a bit more margin for as many to make the cut off times as possible.

2006 Footage

I came across this channel 10 footage while surfing the web. It gives you a taste of what we might expect this weekend. http://westernaustralia.tv/video/100/Avon-Descent-Multiplex-2006-Part-1

Great decision by organisers to modify start times to earlier. I feel very relieved. Now... Pull your finger out and make it rain!!!

2006

From memory 2006 was a 'solid' ~0.35 on day 1, where by 'solid' I mean it actually had that much water behind it and was falling slowly, instead of being a short-lived spike. I've always found there's a difference between solid levels and spike levels....or maybe it's all in my head. :)

2006 comparisons

The comparison between 2006 and 2010 for Walyunga may be ok but my recollection of 2006, supported by photos and video, is that Northam and Toodyay are currently lower than 2006 and as we know will get lower before the start of the (drag)race.
I dont want to be all doom and gloom but we have to be realistic - the 2010 AD is going to be tougher than 2006 and my current theme song (hope)is - when the going gets tough the tough get going SP
