Nose Cone
Submitted by weswark on Wed, 07/14/2010 - 07:42
I am having a great deal of trouble tracking down a nose cone for a 515 double kayak we are taking into the avon descent........... Any suggestions or tips on where to get one OR building one/getting one manufactured?
Thanks in advance
Wes
515 Upgrade #2
You have probably realised that the front paddlers feet are much closer together than at the back allowing for better leg drive.
To get the back person driving remove the foam 'spine' from between the seats and then place a aluminium 'T' bar across the boat between the foot pegs.
A little mucking around and you will be able to bolt it in place.
Use a bread kife to cut a slot in the removed foam and then refit. It would be recomended to replace the slot once in place minus room for the 'T'.
This will alow for the back paddler to move their feet together on the flat stuff and then back into a bracing position for the rapids.
also good advise
will have a look at the setup tomorrow and see how to do what u suggested..... on another note - we are also fitting a pump to the setup, as although we intend to be upright allot of the time....... the view of the Avon is also good whilst upside down and this view tends to be neglected from you more experienced paddlers ;)
515 Upgrade #3
Yes, you are correct a pump does (and did) come in handy. We picked up a pump from Mainpeak and had it fitted just in time to rip our boat apart one week before the race!
We fitted the foot pump to the alloy bracket previously mentioned.
Air bags in the front and back will easily keep you afloat and also reduce the amountof water you can take on.
Get the back person driving
The way I hear it, it's more important to get the back person *steering*. :D
*ducks*
515 Upgrade #1
Wes, I was looking at the Spirit PRS nose cone half an hour ago!
It is just chopped carbon, mixed into a resin.
Try a release agent on the hull, apply the carbon mix and allow to set. Remove the 'cap' sand and finish.
Secure with sicoflex and possibly a screw above the water line.
More on 515 upgrades later!
415 nose cone
Hi Wes,
I've got one on the nose of my 415 (single-kayak version of the 515) which might fit. If it does you're welcome to borrow, whether for the race or to have a copy made up.
Otherwise, princess has extensive experience with putting holes in the noses of 515s and might be able to help - hopefully she'll see this. *grin*
WOW
Juffy that would be absolutely amazing, we are trying to track one down through canoeing down under BUT are not having much luck.......... this would be a great fall back scenario if CDU do not come through tomorrow as we are in the northam to todyay race this weekend and dont trust the 515 100% yet....... can i contact you tomorrow?
Very exciting and relieving :)

Nose Protection
For the record... when travelling in a plastic boat (let's just say... a 515) it is a very good idea to carry an extra large dry bag and some gaffer tape. If the paddlers happened to hit a rock (kind of like the one in the middle of moondynes) and if you happened to have a hole big enough to put your hand through in the front of the boat, you would then insert the front of your boat into the dry bag, tape it on, and this "patch" would allow you to paddle all the way to Bells (including down the rapids at Syds, Walyunga and Bells).
It is, however, much better if the paddler in the back of the boat (who looks a little like the Pilbara Paddler), actually turns the boat BEFORE the rock, rather than dismissing the frantic yells of "Left.. Left ...LEFT!!!!" as being non-important background chatter!
Inaccurate Info
*For the record I've was not 100kg and nor have I ever been. Currently presty close though!
*I believe Princess had the rudder controls.
*I thought we left this behind us
*Princess, get over it and do your talking on the water.
not inaccurate
because I'm referring to an incident in 2000 that I know a lot about
515 crashes!
Did you hapen to show Princess a trick or two! LOL
more 515
for the record, a 515, with a 100+kg back seat paddler can ski oVeR tHe TOP OF THE BiG SLAB @ about 0.8m at moondyne (result of not turning left soon enough)
Not pretty
