Surfs Up

Rookie's picture

Lets have another forum for the surf paddlers out there. I have seen cameras out at my local breaks on skis, kayaks and play boats.

I can only kick this off with some pretty token surf videos, someone must have better footage, show us all. Unfortunately surf was not great on these days, but still reasonable length rides.

Some Token Millennium Waves
Some PRS Waves

There are some good and relatively cheap helmet cameras out there now, search for "ATC camera" and "Gopro camera" to get started.

C'mon folks, show RBPers that there is more to life than rivers, there's a whole ocean out there.

Surfs ... up ... meh?

Took the PRS to Gashies to try out camera positions. Got the position OK for rear shots, but only filmed two crappy waves before battery went flat.

click here for ... meh ... a small wave

I'll be back for more, I have to film a late take-off nose dive on the PRS, just to see the look on my ugly face!

Securing drink system hose?

Hey Rookie,

I just had a look at your video and noticed that your pipe for your drink bladder was sitting up in front of your chest.

Have been wanting to do that with mine but haven't been exactly sure what to use to hold it there. Wasn't really keen on using a coat hanger and spearing myself in the eye when i duck under a tree!

What did you use to secure it?

Drink system hose options

Hey Matear,

The one in the surf videos is coat hanger style, that is what I use on my bike-style back pack bladder. A cheap plastic coated galv-steel hanger, taped to the side of the tube. It was meant to be temporary, but worked fine so it is still there 2 years later. Stainless steel welding rods are a more 'professional' option. Some even feed the SS ones inside the drink tube, I prefer not to as 'gunk' builds up on anything inside the tube. I use that system for ocean paddling, cruising and flat water. It works nicely with my inflatable PFD for ocean stuff too.

I prefer not to have any extra bits hanging around, sticking out for whitewater, rapids, trees etc. Firstly for poke in eye risk, secondly because it can pick up on sticks, twigs, etc, and it can be distracting. Probably not ideal in surf either, but I paddled a few km to the break and back that day.

For whitewater etc, I use either a boat based bladder and long hose that sits on my lap and/or PFD based bladder with tube fed through shoulder straps tucked close to my chest in a front pocket, where I can reach it with my mouth while paddling.

I like to have fluid on me regardless of boat mounted fluid systems. If I lose my boat for what ever reason, I like to know I have fluids (and basic emergency gear) on me. If you have not got it on you when you need it, it isn't going to help!

I have also experimented with home made quick release neck straps (magnetic & velcro), worked well in the ocean. Be careful these work in all conditions, you don't want to hang yourself! Again I don't like anything like that for whitewater.

There are plenty of other options too, ask around and look at others at events.

Happy paddling ... and drinking ... water that is!

Surfs Up ... ish

Pt Perron was good today, and I was working...

Gashies was quite big but a little sloppy. Occasional set would close out the reef to the island with spilling wave.

Crystals small to mid, peaks everywhere, looked kinda fun.

I think the Safety Bay sand bar looked the best. Light wind lifting faces, clean mid sized long runs.

I should take the camera for surf reports hehe.

I have to work tomorrow too, damn it. Have fun.
