10 things to try in summer
Submitted by Winged Paddler on Sat, 10/01/2011 - 06:05
1.Learn to roll
2.Learn standing entries / exits (k1 / k2) or jump starts on skis
3.Paddle in a proper seabreeze (you will never complain about wind again)
4.Paddle along the coast line at dusk as the seabreeze fades.
5.Try different boats e.g. K2's
6.Do a coffee shop paddle on a sunday morning (hey, cyclists do this all year round!)
7.Get some video of yourself paddling
8.Teach someone else to paddle
9.Fix your boats
10.Paddle around Rottnest (I've ALWAYS want to do that!!!)
Anyone up for #10? Maybe at Easter?
Cheers, WP.
3, 5,and 7
This summer I did #3. A LOT. Saturday may have been the last good downwind of the season so we did Freo to Sorrento and it was fantastic!!
I also did #5. I paddled two skis I have never paddled before, Robberg Express and the very cute Carbonology - highly recommend to everyone to paddle as many different boats as you can. I also sat in (note: not paddled) two K1s. I was not happy in either and one I lasted about 5m before I made an ungraceful exit.
Also #7 which showed me that my technique needs serious work. I knew that, but it's good to know exactly what you're doing wrong and video is the best way.
#10 . . . I'm keen to paddle across and back with a stop for lunch at the Rottnest pub . . . .
Learnt to roll
Learnt to roll in 1 Hr. Just watched a few instructional videos on the Internet and went down to Champion Lakes. A few swims and a bit of swearing finally got me over the line....
desperately seeking sailor
Hey, just a long shot: has anyone here crewed on a high performance racing dinghy? Looking for a sheethand on a Sharpie tonmorrow. Should be a good sea breeze.
Paddling with a full moon
Ah yes, watching the moon rise as I lower myself into the boat. Feeling the waters gently lapping, and being able to gauge the water temperature in new ways.
Moon Rise?
Bolders,
While you are watching the moon rise, those behind you may be watching it set!
more puns
and we could all stay out, waiting for the crack of Dawn.
Good Luck
It looks like a good one to miss this year. Just a lot like hard work.
thanks!!
Thanks Wally, you are definitely the wiser sitting this one out. I think it will be somewhere between 'painful' and 'abject misery'.
Which is probably what moving from Bunbury to Perth will be like this weekend . . . good luck to you and Rach too! :-)
just a wee island
WP:
I'd be interested in discussing a paddle around Rotto - were you thinking of starting from the mainland, paddling around it, then returning to the mainland? Or starting from Rotto, paddling around it, and returning to the Quokka Arms?
I prefer the latter, in case it goes out to a vote.

Item # 11
OK, you're all a sick bunch of readers!
Everyone that I've spoken to about this posting, without exception, has wanted a #11 added to the list.
So, OK, here it is; you're most requested 'thing to do in summer', as requested by the readership:
# 11. Paddle at night, under a full moon, in the nude!
(See, I told you that you were a sick bunch...)
moon-light paddle
has a certain ring to it.
nude paddling
Really, WP? Cos I notice that no-one has actually mad that comment on here . . . :-)
Strange thing that; the comments were all in person, and not through the site. All in good taste though!
I should also note that one or two of these discussions were with non-paddlers. That probably says something about the way that non-paddlers view paddlers.
I'm up for the former.
Much easier to paddle your boat across than take it on the ferry. There's still pubs on the mainland for you to finish at Di. And you will have earnt it more.
We'll let you know . . .
. . . how 'easy' it is to paddle across to Rotto Wally, cos about 150 people will be doing it tomorrow! I don't think it will be easy at ALL.
