Most likely it will be less choppy than the Classic Paddle and leg leashes will be required!!
Moore River
Marathon was nice, today. No surf but the water was still in the river.
First and last
First ocean race and first last place !
This paddling stuff is a whole heap-o-fun... had a great day at the Mandurah Classic. unfortunately I rolled off most the waves but i caught a few good ones which helped heaps.
I found it a bit hard to get a good rhythm going rolling back off the waves all the time. But it showed me how much speed you get when you do catch the waves (i think my CTR isn't gonna be around much longer).
I had an awesome time, I 'powered' home for the last few 100m in an ego driven attempt not to come in last. All was going well except when i stepped off my kayak at the finish.. i fell over and stretched/tore a ligament or broke my thumb? and walked across the mat last :) So I think i'm gonna have to miss out on the Bay to Beach... bugger!
Thanks to everyone for their support especially Skigirl, the leg leash was no prob at all (your partner very kindly offered to let me try out his spirit racing ski which I'd love to try... i'll leave you my email)
cheers Pete

well done Pete!
Someone has to finish DFL . . . :-) And that will probably be the last time that you do!
Sorry to hear about your thumb, however tape it back together with a few paddle pop sticks and do the B2B anyway. :-)
Glad to hear you're already considering a ski upgrade, it is a long slippery slope this boat buying, once you start wanting to go faster! Definitely give Karl's Spirit a go (he thought it was a hoot that you think he's my partner).
whoops
whoops!
Leg leashes?
What's a leg leash?
How much do they cost?
Where's a good place to buy one?
What's a good one?
What are the pros and cons of using them?
Are they compulsory for this event?
Thanks
first ocean paddle
I went for my first ocean paddle this arvo. It was a little bit rough. I ended up going off from South Beach. I had a ball, paddling up and down for an hour or so. I dropped myself off the kayak a few times deliberately and managed to get back on fine. I put a paddle to kayak leash on but I read that this race needs a leg leash... how does that work? Would you get tangled in it if you came off?
Really looking forward to getting out on the ocean lot more. This kayaking stuff is a shit load of fun.

excellent pj!
Well done on your first ocean paddle and successful remounts. It's a lot more fun out there when you know you can get back on. :-)
Leg leash- Spirit sells good ones that velcro around your leg just under your knee, then clip to the other part which is attached to the boat. Do NOT have the leg leash attached when going in or out thru the surf, it is dangerous.
Yes you can get tangled up in it, but the point of them is to make sure your boat doesn't blow away if you come off in windy conditions. Not really an issue with a plastic ski. I've got tangled a couple times but I'm next to the ski and holding it so I just unclip the leash and reclip when I get back in.
leg leashes... again
sorry Ski girl didn't see this until after my last post about leg leashes... you say Spirit sell a good one... where would one buy such a leg leash...as in what shop address?
I bought a paddle leash... is that worth using?
Spirit Paddlesports
Hi Pj-
Spirit Paddlesports is in Osborne Park, on Sundercombe St very close to Mainpeak. Rumour has it the shop recently changed its name to Go Paddle.
Paddle leashes are useful if you find that you let go of your paddle, I seem to always have a death-like grip on mine so I'm not worried about losing it. Some people find it easier to remount their skis without the paddle in their hands, if that applies to you, definitely get a paddle leash!
See you on Saturday in Mandurah, with your mandatory leg leash!

Got my leg leash... went for
Got my leg leash... went for a paddle out from City Beach this arvo... that was interesting and lots of fun!
I'm goin'
This'll be my first ocean race... any tips? I'll be on my spirit ctr... with a wave deflector :)
Excellent!
Great to hear pj! Your write-up on the Classic sounds like you've figured out a fair bit about ocean paddling, and if this race is anything like last year it will be flat flat flat anyway.
We're hoping it's not, of course, so my tips would be wear a leg leash, practice remounts with the leg leash attached, and spend as much time in the ocean as possible.
Hillaries is great for learning - you can paddle out through the harbour into 'real' ocean and then retreat if you're not comfortable! You can go in and out catching waves along the sea wall, a good simulation of downwind conditions. See you on the water!!
Yeah I'm definitely gonna
Yeah I'm definitely gonna wear a leash and do some ocean runs before then. I'm in Thornlie so it's a bit of a trip for me... any other good spots SOR... I might try South beach at Freo???
Freo paddling
Hi pj, yes the beaches around Freo are good too, not too much of a shore break to worry about.
I can suggest Port Beach in front of Salt on the Beach restaurant - showers, toilets, and microbrewed beer to relax with afterwards!!
You can paddle up to Cott and back, about 10km return from memory.
Sounds good

Ocean paddling
Another good SOR spot is from Point Peron - you can paddle along the reef towards or around Penguin Island and there is a nice reef break near the point with several different levels of surf (ie easy, hard and oh my I want to go home now) depending on the surf (also good because if you fall in everything blows back into the beach). There are also a few tucked away corners if it's windy. We also use Palm Beach going North (towards the grain terminal) for flat water on a windy day and South (under the causeway) if we want to get into some swell, waves and wind.
Thanks... for that... might
Thanks... for that... might try Penguin Island one day.
